I can promise you one thing: this ain’t no AI. I have known Solomon King for somewhere’s north of 30 years, and that perspective allows me to assure you: he is uniquely, insanely human. No algorithm could wrap its silly little head around his beginnings in big, bad Detroit when it was big, bad Detroit - and I’m talking working the factory line at Ford, and, damn, so what if his hands got a little busted up, he played his guitar till all hours after, whether it was at a club, his current old lady’s, or his crib in Belmont, murder capital of the western world.
At some boiling point, Solomon’s horizons just had to expand, and he hit the road, ended up by the Pacific Ocean where I first heard him on Venice Beach, singing his neon lit songs for all who would listen. And there have been a lot of us, as his Grammy nomination, six albums, and non stop touring will tell. As does this here vinyl beauty, which takes flight with a burnished Angel From Montgomery, rumbles to the tick tok of his Father’s Watch, goes All The Way Down, and comes back up with the haunting Queen of Diamonds - this is a two lane blacktop ride to what it is to be human. Just listen.
